ECT Funding

A summary of the DfE funding available to schools
for the different training options...

Those schools eligible for DfE funding for ECT induction are state maintained schools, maintained and non-maintained special schools and independent schools receiving Section 41 funding.

ECTs eligible for funding are those holding Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and start their induction after September 2021.

Schools that are not eligible for funding can arrange an ECF-based training programme directly with a lead provider, but will need to fund the programme themselves.

ECTs with Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) are not eligible for DfE funding, because they are exempt from statutory induction.

Schools following a Full ECT training programme

Year One

Funding to cover the 10% ECT timetable release and Induction Mentor mentor interactions is paid through the Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG) into a school's core funding - there is not an amount within this 'ringfenced' for ECT induction.

Backfill payments, to cover an Induction Mentor attending training during Year One, are made directly to schools, as part of 36 hours' funding over the two years, using data collected in the Schools Workforce Census - this 36 hours of funding amounts to £1929.24 per Mentor; if a Mentor mentors more than one ECT, the school will only receive one amount for this Induction Mentor.

Year Two

Funding to cover the 5% ECT timetable release and 20 hours of Induction Mentor mentor interactions is paid directly to schools in the Summer of Year Two - £1500 per ECT and £1100 per Induction Mentor.

Induction Mentor training funding is as Year One

Proportionate funding is received for ECTs on a reduced induction, serving induction part-time, move to a new school or withdraw from induction during Year Two or take parental leave.
