Supporting of an ECT

This is the domain
of the ECT and Induction Tutor...

ECTs and Induction Tutors should make themselves familiar with the content of the Lambeth Appropriate Body Handbook, as all ECTs must follow an individualised programme of support and assessment during their induction.

This is regardless of whether the ECT is following the Lambeth/LSTSH Full training programme, an alternative Full programme, a Core programme or a school-designed programme.

There are certain elements of the support programme that must take place:

  • The pre-planning of each Induction Period - when will key elements take place? (Timeline)

  • Setting of developmental targets for the ECT during the course of their induction (ADP - Action and Development Plan)

  • Regular observation of the ECT's teaching and observation of others by the ECT

  • Regular meetings between ECT and Induction Tutor

The key thing is that these activities take place to the benefit of the ECT, but there must also be an element of record-keeping.

The templates below may help an ECT and Induction Tutor to keep an ongoing record of induction - if these templates are not used, then alternative means of recording this information should be used, which should enable anyone needing to refer to them - from within the school or outside - to be clear about the information recorded:

A school has to report periodically on an ECT's progress towards successful completion of induction, through the submission of Progress Reviews and assessment reports to Lambeth.

For Term Six of the 2021-2022 academic year and Terms Two, Four and Six of 2022-2023, ECT Progress Reviews or Assessment Reports should be submitted as below, depending on which cohort the ECT is part of:

Each Progress Review will cover the two terms (remember, Lambeth operates a six-term year...) preceding the submission date, and each assessment report will cover the six terms preceding the submission date (although the two Progress Reviews submitted during the course of the preceding six terms should inform the assessment, so only the two terms preceding the report will need to be reviewed in depth).

Should it become apparent that there is an issue, or are issues, which may hinder the ECT's progress towards successfully completing induction, the Induction Tutor should complete and return a Cause for Concern Form to Lambeth - this not only fulfil's the school's duty to keep Lambeth (as Appropriate Body) up-to-date, but allows Lambeth to offer advice and support to those concerned:

An ECT is allowed 29 days of absence in the first year of induction - at this point, the slate is wiped clean, and the ECT is allowed
29 days of absence in the second year of induction.

Should the ECT reach 30 days of absence in either year, this triggers an automatic extension of their induction (from the date of first return to school after reaching 30 days) of the length of absences during that year - this will mean that future Progress Review and assessment report dates will be delayed, as will their completion of induction.

Should an ECT leave before completing induction, a school should notify Lambeth of this as soon as it is known - an interim Assessment Report may also be required; Lambeth will be able to advise on this.
